Mick's Socks

I'm definitely going to have to start coming up with some more imaginative names for my knitting projects, aren't I? I've got away with naming the new addition to Mick's sock drawer 'Mick's Socks' only because the first pair of socks that I knit him were the Blueberry Waffle Socks. Should I go on to knit him more pairs of socks, which I'm sure I will as he's very happy with the two pairs I've knit him so far, they can't all be called Mick's Socks.

I used a basic sock pattern for these socks but changed the heel to a slip stitch heel which makes it a little more durable.

The Opal yarn felt very rough and scratchy when I first started using it but it does seem to have softened a little and perhaps it will ease more with wear. I'm happy how easy it was to match the pattern. The yarn is the 'Moments of...' range which reflects emotional moments experienced through life, the one I've used is colourway 9087, Rebellion.

Even though this project is now finished, my needles haven't stayed empty for long, there's been a few new projects cast on which I'll tell you about at a later date.

    1. I think I'll have to set myself a challenge to come up with better names for my projects. I've got quite a few things on the needles at the moment so I'll share them soon.

  2. Lovely socks. Must find that wool that I bought in 2015 for "foot warmers". There's a title for you. Now you've got us wondering what is on the needles. Take care.

    1. There's so many projects that I've bought yarn for which I haven't got round to knitting up yet, there just isn't enough hours in the day. I've got four knitting projects on the needles at the moment, more information to follow.

  3. I often get blocks when it comes to the title, as alot of what I say and show has been done before, it hard to clever. Love the socks, still not sorted a pattern for me to try yet.

    1. I'm not very imaginative when it comes to titles of blog posts, I could never be called a wordsmith. There's lots of plain sock patterns on Ravelry if you're a member.

  4. These are cool, very manly. No doubt Mick just calls them 'socks' - if he is anything like my own husband that is. I can't imagine Richard stand in front of the sock drawer pondering whether to wear the 'rebellious' socks or the 'stormfront' socks. Me, I like a name that can be associated with style, colour etc.

Must finish my own socks, these have been on the needles since before Christmas....

    1. Your comment made me laugh, no, I couldn't imagine Mick in that scenario either. I like the colour of these socks, they're a good design for a man. You might just get a little wear out of your socks if you get them finished before the warmer weather comes.

  5. Hi Jo! These socks look great and I bet they're cosy too. Maybe these could be called Mick's Rebellion Socks based on the yarn you used. x

    1. I don't think you can bean handknitted socks for cosiness. I think I'll have to start giving my socks names according to the yarn or pattern used.

  6. Sorry, I can't think up a suitable name, but lovely socks!

    1. I think these will be forever known as Mick's Socks, but I do need to improve my naming technique for future projects.

  7. I love the color of the socks! I like the pattern the yarn made. I know it is hard to come up with names for the projects! I hope Mick enjoys his second pair!

    1. Variegated yarn is such a great invention, it provides some great patterns without the work of having to change colour. Mick's pleased with his hand knitted socks so I doubt these will be the last pair I make for him.

    1. I've got lots of pairs of needles in use at the moment, I've cast on lots of new projects. Hand knit socks are so warm, perfect for when you're out and about.

  10. i do like the self patterning yarns, I haven't tried Opal though. Fabel is a bit scratchy but softens up after a couple of washes.

    1. I've only used Opal yarn on two occasions and I can't say I'm overly impressed. I've got some Fabel in my stash but haven't got round to knitting it up yet.

  11. Socks need names? How about Fred & Ginger? LOL

The socks look great - I'm so glad they got softer as you went on. The very idea of scratchy socks is making my toes curl! :oD

    1. Ha ha, that made me laugh. The one thing about hand knitted socks is their cosiness so it's not great if the yarn is scratchy.

  12. I guess you could call it - More of Micks Socks!

They do look good, and I like the colourways.

Happy Friday, where do these weeks go?

    All the best Jan

    1. I think there will be more and more of Mick's socks now he's started with hand knits. There's so much choice with yarn these days, so many lovely colourways.

  13. Lovely socks! I still have the same pair on the needles from a couple of months ago but I usually prefer to do easier knitting when watching tv so these are a before bed project, together with a shawl. Now I just have to figure out how get to bed earlier so that I can fit in a few more rows before I nod off.

    1. I like time to concentrate if I'm working on something patterned and I usually have an easy project on the go to work on when I'm watching tv. Bedtime is reserved for reading.

  14. Does Mike have a rebellious streak?? Seriously, thank you for the help and advice that you left on my last post. It's such early days in G.'s situation and we don't really know the detail of what we're dealing with. Jx

  18. One can never have enough knitted socks (I do though so am working my way through socks for workmates). I'm waiting for a package of Drops Fabel sock wool and a couple of new pairs of circulars from The Wool Warehouse in the UK to arrive - incredibly cheap sock wool that goes far for me.

    1. I really need to restock my own sock drawer, I keep knitting socks but they end up being for other people, I need to concentrate on myself for a bit. I've got some Drops Fabel in my stash but haven't tried it yet.

  19. Nice pattering of the Opel wool, Dh found it softened quite a bit when I knitted him a pair, I didn't find it too nice to knit with though.

    1. I like the patterning but not so keen on how scratchy the yarn is, I'm glad I'm not the only one who found it this way.
