AS Level Results

It's A level results day today. Eleanor's half way through her A levels so she went in to school this morning to collect her AS level results. She was rather disappointed with a D in both Biology and English Language, but she got a C in Psychology and a B in Sociology so they were decent grades.

Eleanor's studied really hard for these exams, it doesn't come easy to her and I've seen just how much effort she's put in so I'm really proud of her. These grades count towards her overall A level grades but she's got another year yet to improve on that grade D in Biology, which she'll have to do to go on and study the subject she wants to take at university. She will only take three of the subjects to A level so I assume she'll drop English Language. She's got a meeting with her form tutor when she goes back to school to discuss this.

She's been a little upset this morning but I know how determined she is to get where she wants to get and follow her chosen career so I know she'll do it. I've got every faith in her.

Well done, Eleanor. You may not have done as well as you'd have liked but I'm proud of you for working so hard and I know you'll continue to do so this next year.

  1. It's such a difficult time for them isn't it. Hope she cheers up and she get there.

    1. It is a difficult time, they're put under so much pressure from day one at school with exams. The B and C grades are fine for what she wants to study, she just needs to improve her Biology grade and I know she'll put lots of effort in to do that.

  2. Well done Eleanor for working hard and achieving good grades. It is a shame I live so far away from you, I'd happily help you with biology. I am a biologist and I think it is great that you would like to study this fascinating subject. Pupils often say that biology is easy (compared to physics, lets say) but I disagree. There are so many really really complicated biological concepts, it is mind boggling. Everything connects to everything and it can be difficult to keep track. Keep working hard, studying biology is very rewarding and opens so many different doors, and behind each door is something else exiting, and more doors to explore :-)

    1. Thank you so much for that, I will let Eleanor read these replies when she gets in. It would be great if she had someone to help her along with her studies out of school but she does take advantage of any extra revision classes which are put on at school. She does seem to know a lot about all the subjects she's taken, I think her problem is that she can't get things down on paper so well when it comes to exams, I wouldn't know how to help her with that aspect of it.

  3. Well done to Eleanor. She'll get there I'm sure. Hard work always pays off.

    1. Thank you. I've always told her that hard work pays off, I think she's going to have to work very hard for it to pay off with her Biology but as I've also said to her, there's always a route through these things, you just might not see it at first.

  4. Well done to Eleanor! My daughter also picked up her results today and got a C in psychology too. I'm quite glad that the AS levels are supposed to be stopping as I'm not sure that they are an improvement on simply studying A level courses for two years xx

    1. Thank you. Well done to your daughter too. They're always messing about with how they structure the exams, I'm quite glad that Eleanor is my last one going through the system.

  5. Congratulations to Eleanor, youngsters have so much more put on them these days, our lives were far more simpler. She sounds determined to get where she wants to be.

    1. Thank you. I think they've probably learnt that the exam system was much simpler in our day as they seem to be slowly returning to the same system. Eleanor's very determined so I'm sure she'll do her very best to get where she wants to be.

  6. Well done to Eleanor, for having a goal and working hard to achieve it. When Stuart was struggling with Maths (he had two teachers, neither of whom seemed to teach him much) we got a tutor for him. It made all the difference and he sailed through the exam. You might be able to find a recent graduate (as Stuart's tutor was) who is looking to earn a little extra doing some tutoring.

    1. Thank you. A tutor outside school is a good idea, we may look in to that. I know lots of students have a little extra help to get them through the exams.

  7. I know how hard Eleanor works at her studies and I have no doubt she will get the grades she needs. She is one determined young lady.

  8. Well done Eleanor perhaps by taking three A levels it will free up a little more time for Biology. Rob dropped an A level after his AS results & it helped him enormously. I've only got Harry left to go it will be interesting to see what the structure will be then xx

    1. Thank you. The more able students usually start off with four subjects which they take to AS level before dropping one for the final year. It gives them options if they're not doing so well in one of the subjects but as you say, it does encroach on their time so she should have more time this coming year once she goes forward with just three subjects. They'll have probably gone through several more different exam structures before Harry gets there, they're always messing about with it.

  9. She did really well. I'm sure she will improve her biology grade. I think it's really wonderful, by the way, that you have been so supportive and encouraging. It must be lifting her spirits.

    1. Thank you. As far as I'm concerned she's done her best and that's all I can ask of her. It's disappointing, yes, but she knows what's required of her now and if she's so determined that this university course is the one for her, she'll continue to work hard and will get there in the end. If she doesn't want to do that, then that's fine with us, we just want her to be happy in whatever she chooses to do, I think that's the most important thing.

  10. Sorry to hear that Eleanor has been upset Jo. It's awful when you know how hard they've worked isn't it? KL got a D in her AS level English Lit, but she retook it, and with hard work and determination she came out with an A at A level, dropping just 3 marks on one of her A level papers. Wishing Eleanor all the best for next year.

    1. Thank you. It's so helpful to hear how other people have gone through a similar situation and come out so well in the end. I remember you telling us about the hard work which KL had put in to improving her grade and how proud of her you were. All we can ask is that they do their best, but when the grades don't match the work they've done it's so disheartening. Eleanor's very determined so I'm sure she'll work her way through. Hope everything's going well at uni for KL.

  11. It's so hard for youngsters who study really hard and don't feel they got the grades to show for it. Eleanor has done so well and she should be very proud of herself. Well done, Eleanor! :o)

    1. Thank you. I agree, it can be demotivating for them so I'm just hoping that Eleanor picks herself up and gets on with it, I'm sure she will as she's very determined. We're extremely proud of her.

  12. Well done Eleanor. Some subjects just done come as easy as others and if the career you have chosen means a little more work, then good on you for persevering with the extra study. Enjoy the rest of the school hols all of you and take care.

    1. Thank you. Eleanor has to work hard at all her studies, exams don't come easy for her even though she seems to know her stuff and gets much higher grades for the work she does in class. I think we do need to enjoy the rest of the holidays now before Eleanor buckles down to some more serious studying, she's got a task ahead of her.

  13. Very well done Eleanor you should be proud.
Wishing you well when you return for your last year of 'school' studies before going on to Uni.

... the years go by so quickly Jo. I bet you can remember when Eleanor attended her very first day at school?

(All the best to Daniel too, he will be starting his final year at Uni soon I think?)

Do hope your week is going well - just think it's Friday now!

    All the best Jan

    1. Thank you. I do remember Eleanor's first day at school, as you say, the years fly by. It's hard to imagine not having children at school any longer, just one more year. Yes, Daniel will be starting his final year at uni, that's flown too. He's doing very well so far.

  14. Please pass on my congratulations to Eleanor. There's a huge jump between GCSE and AS, and the whole style of the exam is quite different. Now that she has experienced the Post-16 exam process I am sure that she will be able to work strategically to get the grade that she wants in Biology. Sending lots of love, Jx

    1. Thank you. I agree about there being a huge jump between the exams, lots of students experience this, Daniel included, so we were aware and tried to warn Eleanor. I'm sure she will do her best to improve on her Biology grade, she's set her sight on the course she wants to take at university.

  15. Well done to Eleanor, and from what you say I'm sure that she'll get the required grade in Biology. I'm glad that I'm not that age taking exams as I think that the pressure and stress really is too much nowadays. Flighty xx

    1. Thank you. I'm glad I'm not at that age either, I agree, there's so much pressure on them now. I don't remember it being like that when I was at school but then I left at 16 after my O levels.

  16. A levels were the hardest thing I have EVER done (& I'm going back a while now). University was a doddle in comparison. Time to take a deep breath, enjoy your last few days of Summer Eleanor and keep going in the coming year. Good Luck. x

  18. Hats off for the C in psychology; David scored a U! But truth be told, he hated the subject from the start. He got an A in English Literature and a B in History, but an E in Religious Studies, so this year he will be working twice as hard! Thank God there's a year to go before Uni.
Tell Eleanor well done; and don't be disappointed. Her grades are good, and if you weren't going to do well in a set of exams, these are a better set than the full A levels next year or finals at Uni. I see they do General Studies at her school. Wish they'd do that at David's. It was always my best subject.....

    1. Thank you. Tell David well done, he's got some great grades and at least he can now drop Psychology, it would have been worse if he'd got his best grade in it. Eleanor got a D in General Studies but she's not really bothered about that as they don't usually take General Studies in to consideration when applying for university. She got an A on the Scientific Domain paper and an E on the Cultural and Social Domains.
